A simple layout change can completely shift how a front entry feels. This project shows how replacing a sidelight with a wider door creates a stronger, more modern entrance.

This project started with a common setup we see across many brick homes: a standard single front door, a narrow sidelight, and a storm door layered over the top.

The storm door was removed as part of the upgrade. With today’s insulated front doors, proper sealing, and a well-built threshold, storm doors are no longer a necessity. Most homeowners now choose to skip them entirely for a cleaner look and simpler daily use.

Rather than repeating the same layout, we reworked the opening to accommodate a 40-inch-wide single entry door. Removing the sidelight allowed the entry to feel more grounded and intentional, while the wider slab immediately changed how the front of the house reads — calmer, more balanced, and more modern.

The result is an entry that feels wider and more solid without overcomplicating the design — one door, done properly, and built to last.
