A tall opening doesn’t always feel grand — sometimes it just feels fragmented. This project shows how simplifying the layout transformed the entire front elevation.

This entry originally relied on multiple elements to create height: a single door, two sidelights, and a transom stacked above. While the opening itself was generous, the layout split it into too many visual parts.

Instead of rebuilding the opening, we consolidated everything into a full-height 8-foot double door. Removing the sidelights and transom allowed the entry to read as one strong vertical element rather than several smaller ones stitched together.

In my personal experience, a double door is more shaky and a bit more drafty. It’s got pins in the passive door, and they always have a bit of play. A single door with sidelights? Way sturdier. I wouldn’t install a double door for myself.

The new double door takes advantage of the existing height, giving the facade a more confident, architectural feel. The proportions are cleaner, the glass is intentional, and the entry matches the scale of the house.

The result is a front door that feels taller, calmer, and far more cohesive — proof that fewer elements, used properly, often make the biggest impact.
